We visited here in late July to hike the Madera Canyon Trail. According to some free camping websites, the Lawrence E. Wood Picnic Area is a place to camp for free. To those ends we did see a class C camper and a truck camper parked there. The places to park are fairly level and most are shaded. I didn’t see any water, or public toilets but perhaps I didn’t look well enough. There are picnic tables there. It is far enough from the road and the road is traveled so infrequently that road noise is not an issue. It is a very beautiful area. The trailhead is on the Eastern end of the picnic area. We went there during monsoon season and there had been a lot of rain the night before; water was coming over the main road but was passable in a car. The trail crosses over a creek that is dry most of the time. When we crossed, it was about calf deep with a strong current. The Madera Canyon Trail is only 2.4 miles and isn’t very strenuous once you get past the early part. At the top there is a lookout where you can see the creek bed and picnic area. Most of the trail goes through a meadow studded with alligator junipers. The pond at the midpoint (in elevation) isn’t very spectacular. I warn you that the trail isn’t very well marked there and you could go off trail. If you follow the creek bed downstream of the pond –like the trail suggests it should go- you will be off trail. The trail goes up at the downstream end of the pond. Look for it.
